Nestled in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal, often referred to as the “Princess of Hill Stations,” has a rich and fascinating history. The name Kodaikanal is derived from the Tamil words ‘Kodai’ meaning summer and ‘kanal’ meaning gift, suggesting that the place is a “gift of the forest” during the summer season.
The earliest inhabitants of Kodaikanal were the Palaiyar tribal people, who lived in the dense forests of the region. Later, during the 14th century, the region came under the influence of the Pandya dynasty, which ruled over Madurai. The Palani Hills served as a summer retreat for the royalty due to its cool climate and scenic beauty.
In the early 19th century, British missionaries and officials discovered Kodaikanal’s pleasant climate and pristine surroundings. In 1821, British Lieutenant B.S. Ward explored the region and recognized its potential as a retreat from the sweltering heat of the plains. By the mid-19th century, American missionaries, led by Dr. Henry and Mrs. Harriet Martyn, established schools and churches in Kodaikanal, making it a popular summer getaway for British officers and missionaries.
The construction of the Kodaikanal Lake in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then Collector of Madurai, further boosted the region’s appeal. The lake soon became the centerpiece of Kodaikanal, drawing visitors from across India and abroad.
Over the years, Kodaikanal evolved into a famous tourist destination known for its serene environment, colonial architecture, and picturesque landscapes. Today, it stands as a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical charm, attracting tourists seeking a peaceful retreat in the lap of nature.
